Evaluation of the hemoCue(r) B-Glucose Analyzer

Abstract
Background:
HemoCue B-Glucose(HemoCue AB, Angelholm, Sweden ; hemocue) analyzer, hand held portable equipment, utilizes glucose dehydrogenase reaction for quantitative measurement of glucose in whole blood or plasma has newly been introduced. Thus, the
performance of HemoCue was evaluated and compared with that of main chemistry anayzer.
Methods:
Hitachi 747, automated chemistry analyzer, using glucose oxidase method was used as the main analyzer for comparison and following studies were conducted : (1) reproducibility of blood glucose assays by HemoCue : (2) comparison of blood
glucose
assays between HemoCue and Hitachi 747 ; (3) influence of test reaction time on glucose values after applying whole blood samples into microcuvette of hemoCue ; and (4) dilutional effect of erythrocytes on blood glucose assays with two pools of
whole
blood specimens of anemic and normal level of hemoglobin.
Results :
1. The coefficient of variations of blood glucose measurement by two hemoCue were 5.5% and 2.1% at glucose level of 112 mg/dl. There were no differences between two HemoCue analyzers.
2. The results of comparison of blood glucose assays performed by Hitachi 747(X) and HemoCue(Y) were as following : y=0.851x+18.623(r=0.99) in serum and y=0.800x +13.220(r=0.98) in whole blood.
3. As the reaction time getting prolonged, glucose level was significantly increased, for example, at 5 minutes of microcuvette reaction time, blood glucose was increased by 14(p<0.0001)
4. At hemoglobin level 15 g/dl, the erythrocytes dilutional effect on blood glucose assays showed 13.5% reduction of whole blood glucose concentration than serum glucose concentration (p<0.001).
Conclusions:
HemoCue is a very reliable and precise portable blood glucose analyzer in which glucose dehydrogenase microchemistry assay is utilized.
